Family Hairstory, 2018
Filmed and edited by Ruth Holmes
A return home to force my camera-shy mother and brother in front of the lens for this abstract mini-doc of the Holmes-Svitek family.
This is the second work to take place in my mother's dining room and the second to to feature a haircut as the main act. There's something tranfomational and also generational there. I want to return to simpler time, when all of us kids lined up for their summer haircuts. But I've taken on a more central role. It's a bit silly, but it's real, too.
The cameras have increased, so now there's a playful juxtaposition between the sharp DSLR and the pixelated laptop webcam.
