Masking, 2018

Filmed, edited, and performed by Ruth Holmes

This short marks a return to my performance-based works. The act is simple, but strange. Bandages slowly accumulate on the skin until the weight of the mask is unbearable. Multiple camera angle with contrasting video high/video low quality are layered on top of each other just the bandages layer over flesh.

The action is rooted in reality, an excess of bandages used to cover skin-picked cuticles and teenaged breakouts. But here it's transformed, becoming about identity, the masking of it. There's also some gender performativity, obviously.

It gets a bit uncanny valley and maybe that's why I like it so much.
