Trans Bodies with Spots, 2019
CW: needles, injection
Filmed and edited by Ruth Holmes
An intimate portrait of a former partner. The original version had a duration of 9:42, but I cut it down here for his privacy. This work also features a beloved pet who is no longer with us, and I miss my dear Lori everyday.
The portrait was brought on by a simultaneity that I drew parallels between. My Lori, allergic to fleas, needed medication to treat her recent outbreak of scabby spots. My partner, in the process of transition, took testosterone which, along with its desired effects, brought on a bought acne from this self-initiated second puberty. Lori was spayed, and a sassy little butch, so in some ways represents a trans experience in a feline. It's an imprecise connection, but an exploration of those ideas nonetheless.
